For many coffee farmers, owning a Yipao was akin to achieving a dream, alongside owning their own homes. Renowned for its robust power and remarkable load-bearing capacity, the Jeep seamlessly navigates the rugged Colombian terrain, offering a vital lifeline for both transporting people and ferrying agricultural produce and supplies. Thus, it became an indispensable tool for farmers, facilitating the transportation of essentials for their communities and their own coffee production.
From surplus to celebration: the evolution of Yipao culture
The Yipao has entrenched itself so deeply in the fabric of coffee farming families that since 1989, the city of Armenia has hosted an annual Yipao parade. Luis Fernando Ramírez, one of the creators of this parade, reminisces about the arrival of the Jeep Willys in Colombia.
In the aftermath of World War II, the United States began exporting surplus vehicles to Colombia. Initially integrated into the Colombian army, these vehicles later found favor among surveyors tasked with cartographic work, particularly in the mountainous regions of Antioquia, Caldas, and Quindío.
Gradually, the Jeep supplanted mules as the preferred mode of transport, carving out its place in coffee culture, where it remains the vehicle of choice today.
Linguistic journey
The colloquial term “Yipao” finds its roots in the distinctive dialect of the Paisa farmers. Just as they use “platao” or “tarrao” to denote a plate or jar filled with something, such as “un platao de frijoles” (a plate of beans), they affectionately refer to the vehicles as “Yipao” due to their tendency to load them with cargo and passengers alike.
The Yipao transcends its role as a mere vehicle. It embodies the spirit of perseverance and adaptability ingrained in Colombia’s coffee culture.
