Colombia through the eyes of a local: a conversation with Angelica Rico

Who better to reveal Colombia’s hidden gems than someone who calls it home? We sat down with Angelica Rico, Director of One Event Colombia, to chat about the country’s most incredible places—from rainbow-colored rivers to the wild Pacific coast. She shares her favorite discoveries, the role of local communities, and what makes Colombia an unforgettable destination.

Introduction

Q: Can you share a bit about your background and your role in the destination?

A: I was born in Bogotá and currently live in Cartagena. With over 15 years of experience in the tourism industry, I have developed a deep understanding of Colombia’s tourism potential. Since 2022, I have been leading as a Director, focusing on showcasing the country’s diverse and authentic experiences to visitors from around the world.

Q: What drew you to work in the tourism industry in this particular location?

A: I was drawn to work in tourism in Colombia because of its breathtaking beauty and extraordinary biodiversity. This country is home to incredible landscapes, vibrant flora, and unique wildlife—especially orchids and birds—that are often unknown to the world. Many people have never heard of our natural wonders or have a misperception of the country, and I want to change that by sharing Colombia’s true essence.

Q: In one sentence, how would you describe your destination to someone who has never been there?

A: Colombia is life itself—while you may not find the most outstanding infrastructure, you will discover unparalleled nature, stunning landscapes, and unique communities that make this country truly special.

Hidden gems and local secrets

Q: How do you search for hidden gems in your destination? Do you personally explore, rely on local tips, or have other methods?

A: Thanks to my work, I have the opportunity to explore extensively, and I always prefer to consult with locals. They hold invaluable knowledge about hidden gems and provide insights that make each discovery even more special.

Q: Can you share a memorable experience of discovering a unique spot or attraction?

A: One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had was visiting Caño Cristales, the “River of Five Colors.” Its vibrant hues, cascading waterfalls, and sense of adventure make it a truly magical and unforgettable journey. The mix of excitement and the apparent remoteness of the destination make it feel like stepping into another world.

The rainbow river or five colors river is in Colombia one of the most beautiful nature places, is called Crystal Canyon

Q: Do you involve the local community in identifying lesser-known places?

A: Absolutely. The local community knows these hidden gems better than anyone else. Their insights provide an authentic and real perspective, ensuring that we highlight destinations in a way that respects and preserves their cultural and natural value.

Evaluating & Incorporating Hidden Gems

Q: Once you find a hidden gem, what steps do you take to evaluate its potential for inclusion in your programs?

A: I evaluate its social impact, ensuring that the experience is mutually beneficial—both for the visitors and for the local community or environment. A destination has potential if it reflects our identity, culture, and history. After that, I focus on technical aspects, working with local suppliers to enhance quality standards while maintaining authenticity.

Q: How do you ensure the spot retains its charm and authenticity when introducing it to visitors?

A: Colombians are naturally charismatic and welcoming, always eager to share their culture. When introducing a new destination, I carefully select local partners who embody this warmth and authenticity. I also prioritize responsible tourism practices to ensure that the charm and essence of these places remain intact.

Q: Are there specific criteria (e.g., accessibility, cultural significance, uniqueness) you consider before adding it to your itinerary?

A: Yes, accessibility is a key factor. Given Colombia’s diverse topography and climate, some stunning places remain difficult to reach. I also consider cultural significance and uniqueness—whether the place tells a story, represents a tradition, or offers an experience that cannot be found elsewhere.

Creating Unique Experiences

Q: Can you share an example of a hidden gem that has become a standout feature in your programs?

A: One example is the Serranía de la Macarena region, beyond Caño Cristales. It’s a place where biodiversity, adventure, and local culture merge. We’ve designed experiences where visitors not only witness its beauty but also engage with conservation efforts and local communities.

Q: How do you design experiences around these locations to make them unforgettable for visitors?

A: We focus on authenticity and immersion. Our experiences are crafted to showcase the essence of each place, whether through guided walks with local experts, culinary tastings with traditional recipes, or cultural exchanges with artisans. We want visitors to feel connected to the destination beyond just seeing it.

Q: Do you collaborate with local businesses or individuals (e.g., guides, artisans, chefs) to enhance the experience?

A: Absolutely! Local guides provide authentic insights, artisans share their craft, and chefs introduce visitors to regional flavors. These collaborations not only enrich the visitor experience but also contribute to the local economy and preserve traditions.

Balancing Discovery and Preservation

Q: How do you balance promoting hidden spots while ensuring they are preserved and respected?

A: Sustainability is key. We work closely with local communities and environmental organizations to establish guidelines that protect natural and cultural heritage. Limiting visitor numbers, using eco-friendly practices, and promoting responsible tourism are part of our approach.

Q: Have you ever decided not to include a place because it was too sensitive or fragile for tourism?

A: There are places where local communities prefer to keep their traditions private. In such cases, we respect their wishes and seek alternative ways to support these regions.

Final Thoughts & Insider Tips

Q: What advice would you give to travelers looking to uncover hidden gems in your destination?

A: Be curious and open-minded! Engage with locals, take the less-traveled paths, and don’t rush through the experience.

Q: What is your personal favorite hidden spot in your region, and why?

A: The Coffee Region is a personal favorite. It’s a perfect blend of nature, gastronomy, charming towns, and warm hospitality. The rolling hills covered in coffee plantations, vibrant flowers, and diverse birdlife make it an enchanting place to visit.

Q: If you could introduce just one lesser-known place to every visitor, what would it be?

A: The Pacific coast of Colombia. It’s still largely unexplored, yet it offers an unparalleled mix of whale watching, Afro-Colombian culture, lush rainforests, and breathtaking beaches. It’s a place where nature and culture exist in perfect harmony.
